Kirk Guthaus
I am a lifelong musician, educator, and parent dedicated to creating inclusive and transformative learning experiences for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As Program Director for Lifelong Learning with Friends (LLwF), I bring nearly two decades of experience as a professional musician and educator, both in the classroom and in community-based programs.
My Story
My journey into the world of disability advocacy is both professional and deeply personal. I am the proud parent of two children with special needs, and this lived experience has profoundly shaped my approach to education and inclusion. I have worked as a classroom special education teacher and a music educator, using adaptive teaching methods to ensure all students—regardless of ability—can access and participate in the joy of learning.
My philosophy of Adaptive Music—making music accessible to learners of all abilities—has guided my work with nonprofit organizations to design inclusive music education programs. Drawing from my own journey through injury and chronic pain following military service, I’ve developed and applied adaptive techniques to help others overcome physical, cognitive, or emotional barriers to creative expression.
With degrees in Philosophy, Humanities, and Music Education, and certificates in Autism Education, Musicianship, Ethnomusicology, and Music Research, I approach my work through a multidisciplinary lens. I take a holistic approach to teaching—one that integrates music, movement, conversation, and hands-on learning to reach the whole person. I believe learning is most powerful when it connects to lived experiences, sparks curiosity, and encourages self-expression. Whether I am developing curriculum, teaching adaptive music, or collaborating with nonprofit partners, my goal is always to create space for meaningful connection, creativity, and growth.
At Lifelong Learning with Friends, I have the honor of working alongside students, families, university partners, and community organizations to design vibrant, college-style courses that combine academic challenge with social connection and fun. Our mission is to make lifelong learning possible for adults with IDD by offering engaging classes on topics ranging from science and music to literature, art, and culture. Every day, I am inspired by our students’ curiosity, creativity, and resilience—and I am proud to help build a community where all learners can thrive.
