Service Description
[Hybrid] Sports Around the World: Winter Sports by Sidney Harris, on Tuesday evenings, 6:00-8:00 pm CST from 10/20/26-12/01/26 (skipping 11/24 for Thanksgiving break), synchronously meeting in-person on UT campus and online using Zoom Every four years, the world tunes in to watch athletes do things that make no sense. They dive headfirst down ice tracks at 80 miles per hour. They spin five times in the air on a blade thinner than a finger. In 1980, a team of American college students even beat the greatest hockey team on Earth. This course is about those athletes, their sports, and the stories behind them. Each week, we will pick a different winter sport, trace its history, learn how it is played, and relive its most famous moments, from the Jamaican bobsled team to the Miracle on Ice. We will also dig into the bigger picture. How do champions stay calm under pressure? Why do athletes risk so much for a few seconds of glory? And what makes a good teammate? You do not need to know anything about winter sports to take this course. In fact, you do not even need to have seen snow. Our sessions will be hands-on, mixing lively presentations with highlight reels, guest speakers, and plenty of interactive activities. The course ends with a class-wide floor curling tournament, taught by your instructor, a two-time national champion in the sport.

Cancellation Policy
Our classes operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, with limited seating for up to 13 participants to ensure a quality learning experience. By registering, you reserve a valuable seat that may prevent others from joining. We understand that plans can change. However, cancellations made within one week of the class start date are not eligible for refunds. If you are unable to attend, we are happy to offer a course voucher, allowing you to apply your registration toward a future class of your choice. Parent/Guardian Attendance Policy Our program is designed to empower adults with IDDs to participate in classes at UT Austin alongside their peers, including both other adult students and college students. We encourage our participants to build self-confidence, practice age-appropriate social skills, and experience the independence of a college environment, just as any neurotypical college student would. To support this mission, parents and guardians are not permitted to attend classes with their student. However, if there are special circumstances—such as a need for assistance with personal care or concerns about behavior—exceptions to this policy may be considered. These exceptions require review and approval by our Executive Director, Kaelin Rubenzer, on a case-by-case basis. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
