Service Description

[In Person] Presence: Learning Connection Through the Performing Arts by Susan Dunn-Rachleff on Tuesday evenings, 6:00-8:00 pm CST from 9/08/26-10/13/26, meeting in person on Rice University campus We are often inspired and moved when we watch a musician, actor, or dancer illuminate the stage with authentic presence. Their ability to communicate, connect, and fully engage in the moment can leave a lasting impression. But is this capacity for presence an innate gift, or is it something that can be learned? The encouraging answer is that presence is not only reserved for performers. It is a human capacity that can be cultivated. In this course, you will explore the science of presence through the lens of the performing arts. By studying behavioral neuroscience alongside the practices of exceptional performers and inspiring public figures, you will discover how presence, connection, and communication emerge when we feel safe, engaged, and fully aware of ourselves and our surroundings. You will learn what it means to be present—mentally, physically, emotionally, and vocally—and how the nervous system influences our ability to connect with others. Through practical exercises, guided reflection, and evidence-informed strategies, you will develop tools to regulate stress, increase self-awareness, strengthen communication, and cultivate meaningful engagement in everyday life. Whether your goal is to build confidence, navigate personal challenges, strengthen relationships, or simply experience life with greater awareness and connection, this course offers practical tools for developing resilience, courage, and authentic presence. By seeing presence through the eyes of performers, you will discover that the qualities which inspire us on stage are the very same qualities that can enrich our lives beyond it.

Upcoming Sessions

Cancellation Policy

Our classes operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, with limited seating for up to 13 participants to ensure a quality learning experience. By registering, you reserve a valuable seat that may prevent others from joining. We understand that plans can change. However, cancellations made within one week of the class start date are not eligible for refunds. If you are unable to attend, we are happy to offer a course voucher, allowing you to apply your registration toward a future class of your choice. Parent/Guardian Attendance Policy Our program is designed to empower adults with IDDs to participate in classes at UT Austin alongside their peers, including both other adult students and college students. We encourage our participants to build self-confidence, practice age-appropriate social skills, and experience the independence of a college environment, just as any neurotypical college student would. To support this mission, parents and guardians are not permitted to attend classes with their student. However, if there are special circumstances—such as a need for assistance with personal care or concerns about behavior—exceptions to this policy may be considered. These exceptions require review and approval by our Executive Director, Kaelin Rubenzer, on a case-by-case basis. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
