Service Description

This class explores music through active participation, where we play, sing, and move together to understand how music works. Using ukuleles, guitars, percussion, and body movement, we engage with music in a hands-on way while building a strong foundation in core concepts such as beat, meter, rhythm, melody, harmony, and chord progressions. Grounded in the Access Before Mastery framework, the class begins with participation rather than waiting for skill development. We make music together from the start, using shared experience as the entry point for learning. Through ensemble playing, listening, and interaction, we develop understanding while also using music as a way to connect and communicate with one another. We explore songs like “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake, “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift, and “We All Live In a Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles, using them as a foundation for both musical exploration and group performance. Each class includes guided listening, short demonstrations, discussion, and ensemble playing, allowing us to connect musical ideas directly to real music. Throughout the course, we layer instruments, build rhythm patterns, follow chord progressions, and shape musical expression through dynamics and movement. The focus is on how individual parts come together to form a cohesive group sound, with each person contributing in their own way. By the end of the course, we bring these elements together in group performances that reflect both musical understanding and shared experience. The class emphasizes participation, collaboration, and connection, using music as a meaningful and engaging way to learn, create, and communicate. No prior music experience is required.

Cancellation Policy

Our classes operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, with limited seating for up to 13 participants to ensure a quality learning experience. By registering, you reserve a valuable seat that may prevent others from joining. We understand that plans can change. However, cancellations made within one week of the class start date are not eligible for refunds. If you are unable to attend, we are happy to offer a course voucher, allowing you to apply your registration toward a future class of your choice. Parent/Guardian Attendance Policy Our program is designed to empower adults with IDDs to participate in classes at UT Austin alongside their peers, including both other adult students and college students. We encourage our participants to build self-confidence, practice age-appropriate social skills, and experience the independence of a college environment, just as any neurotypical college student would. To support this mission, parents and guardians are not permitted to attend classes with their student. However, if there are special circumstances—such as a need for assistance with personal care or concerns about behavior—exceptions to this policy may be considered. These exceptions require review and approval by our Executive Director, Kaelin Rubenzer, on a case-by-case basis. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
