[Virtual] Disney Soundtracks
Exploring Culture Through Music
Service Description
How does music help tell stories about people, places, and cultures around the world? In this virtual class, we will explore music from Disney movies and learn how sound, rhythm, and instruments connect to culture and identity. We will listen to familiar songs like “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story, “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid, “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto, along with many more. As we listen, we will talk about what we hear and feel, noticing things like rhythm, instruments, and energy in the music. You can share your ideas by speaking, using the chat, showing with your body, or drawing. We will also make music together using what we have at home; clapping, tapping, using simple instruments, our voices, and movement. You can follow along with rhythms, create your own sounds, or join in group music-making experiences where everyone participates in their own way. Each week focuses on a different cultural theme. We will explore how music connects to place, identity, and storytelling through films like Moana, Mulan, Aladdin, and Coco, among others. You will have the chance to listen, move, play, and connect with others in a supportive online environment. No prior experience is needed—just come ready to participate and explore.

Cancellation Policy
Our classes operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, with limited seating for up to 13 participants to ensure a quality learning experience. By registering, you reserve a valuable seat that may prevent others from joining. We understand that plans can change. However, cancellations made within one week of the class start date are not eligible for refunds. If you are unable to attend, we are happy to offer a course voucher, allowing you to apply your registration toward a future class of your choice. Parent/Guardian Attendance Policy Our program is designed to empower adults with IDDs to participate in classes at UT Austin alongside their peers, including both other adult students and college students. We encourage our participants to build self-confidence, practice age-appropriate social skills, and experience the independence of a college environment, just as any neurotypical college student would. To support this mission, parents and guardians are not permitted to attend classes with their student. However, if there are special circumstances—such as a need for assistance with personal care or concerns about behavior—exceptions to this policy may be considered. These exceptions require review and approval by our Executive Director, Kaelin Rubenzer, on a case-by-case basis. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
