[Virtual] The Amazing Taylor Swift
Music, Stories, and Self-Expression
Service Description
Over the past two decades, Taylor Swift has become one of the most influential songwriters in popular music, known for her ability to transform personal experiences into structured, meaningful songs. Her work provides clear examples of how music can communicate ideas, emotions, and narratives. In this class, we will examine music as a form of storytelling by analyzing songs such as “Love Story,” “You Belong With Me,” “Shake It Off,” and “All Too Well.” Through guided listening and discussion, participants will explore key musical and conceptual elements, including lyric meaning, emotional expression, and basic song structure (such as verse and chorus). We will focus on how these elements work together to create a clear and engaging narrative. Participants will apply these concepts through structured activities that support multiple ways of learning. These include identifying emotions in music, sequencing events in a song’s story, and exploring how rhythm and repetition support communication. Each session includes both collaborative and individual opportunities to engage with the material. Building on these academic concepts, participants will develop their own ideas and learn ways to express personal experiences through music. This process may include creating lyrics, organizing ideas into a simple song structure, or using movement, visuals, or spoken word to communicate meaning. By the end of the course, participants will have explored multiple approaches to sharing their own stories, using music as a tool for communication and expression. No prior music experience is needed—participants can engage in ways that feel comfortable to them while developing understanding, creativity, and confidence.

Cancellation Policy
Our classes operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, with limited seating for up to 13 participants to ensure a quality learning experience. By registering, you reserve a valuable seat that may prevent others from joining. We understand that plans can change. However, cancellations made within one week of the class start date are not eligible for refunds. If you are unable to attend, we are happy to offer a course voucher, allowing you to apply your registration toward a future class of your choice. Parent/Guardian Attendance Policy Our program is designed to empower adults with IDDs to participate in classes at UT Austin alongside their peers, including both other adult students and college students. We encourage our participants to build self-confidence, practice age-appropriate social skills, and experience the independence of a college environment, just as any neurotypical college student would. To support this mission, parents and guardians are not permitted to attend classes with their student. However, if there are special circumstances—such as a need for assistance with personal care or concerns about behavior—exceptions to this policy may be considered. These exceptions require review and approval by our Executive Director, Kaelin Rubenzer, on a case-by-case basis. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
